Mount Kilimanjaro

6 Days Mount Kilimanjaro Trek – Machame Route

The Machame Route, often called the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic paths to Mount Kilimanjaro’s summit. Known for its stunning vistas, rich biodiversity, and varied terrain, this route offers a challenging yet rewarding climb. Over six days, trekkers journey through lush rainforests, moorlands, alpine deserts, and arctic landscapes, culminating in a sunrise summit at Uhuru Peak. Unlike the Marangu Route, the Machame Route uses a camping system rather than huts, allowing climbers to experience the mountain’s natural beauty more intimately. The route offers good acclimatization with its “climb high, sleep low” profile, making it a favorite for those seeking a balance between challenge and success rate. This 6-day trek is ideal for adventurers in good physical condition looking for an immersive wilderness experience. With expert guides, dedicated porters, and scenic campsites, the journey not only leads to Africa’s highest peak but also builds camaraderie and deep appreciation for the mountain’s majesty.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours | Distance: 11 km
  • Vegetation Zone: Rainforest
  • Overnight: Machame Camp (shared tents)

The adventure begins at Machame Gate with registration formalities. The trail starts through a dense rainforest, where you might spot colobus monkeys and hear exotic birdcalls. It’s a steady uphill trek, with humid air and thick vegetation providing an enchanting welcome. Upon reaching Machame Camp, you’ll rest and enjoy your first night on the mountain.

  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours | Distance: 5 km
  • Vegetation Zone: Moorland
  • Overnight: Shira Camp (shared tents)

Leaving the forest behind, the path ascends through moorland filled with giant heathers and volcanic rock formations. Today’s hike is shorter but steeper, with stunning views opening up as you reach the Shira Plateau. You’ll arrive at Shira Camp in time for rest, acclimatization, and incredible sunset views over Mount Meru in the distance.

  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours | Distance: 10 km
  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
  • Overnight: Barranco Camp (shared tents)

Today involves a climb to Lava Tower (4,630 m) followed by a descent to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is key for acclimatization. The terrain becomes more rugged with fewer plants. After lunch at Lava Tower, you’ll descend into the Barranco Valley, known for its giant groundsels and the dramatic Barranco Wall looming ahead.

  • Hiking Time: 7–9 hours | Distance: 9 km
  • Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
  • Overnight: Barafu Camp (shared tents)

You begin the day by scaling the iconic Barranco Wall—a thrilling, non-technical scramble offering sweeping views. The trail then winds through the Karanga Valley before reaching Barafu Camp. This is your base for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, rest and prepare for the midnight summit push.

  • Hiking Time: 11–15 hours | Distance: 17 km
  • Vegetation Zones: Arctic to Moorland
  • Overnight: Mweka Camp (shared tents)

Around midnight, you’ll begin the final ascent under a starry sky. The climb is steep and challenging, with frequent short breaks. At Stella Point (5,756 m), you’ll witness a magnificent sunrise before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the roof of Africa. Celebrate briefly, then descend to Barafu for a short rest and continue down to Mweka Camp.

  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: 10 km
  • Vegetation Zone: Rainforest
  • Overnight: Not included (transfer to Arusha or Moshi)

After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your climb concludes. You’ll receive a summit certificate and be met by your driver for a transfer back to your lodge in Moshi or Arusha—tired but triumphant after an unforgettable journey.
